CESBound
As you may have noticed, I haven’t been around here much. I have, though, been working on a project or two at work.
Over the last couple of months we have been hard at work on a 1972 Volkswagon Westfalia, dubbed “Double Nickels”. The goal was not only to restore it but to put it on the road a week before CES, stopping along the way to meet up with everyday people. A full restoration (engine, interior, paint and suspension) enabled us to get the VW down the road on a 2500 mile trip from Nashville to Las Vegas…via New Orleans, Austin, Las Cruces, Phoenix and even a quick stop at the Grand Canyon.
Over the 6 month of work and throughout the trip we kept a video log of the process for all to enjoy.

So you’ve experienced the art of driving and keeping an old VW running. What’s the final word? Are modern cars better or is stepping back into the 20th century in your future?

Well, I stepped back 25 years with the beemer. I think if I found an interesting buy, I might go for something a little more, uh, rustic. But, that might be in the order of a project bike first.

You thinking old small displacement singles like a Honda 160 – 350 or maybe a 4 cylinder 750 size? Any particular make? I’d stick with a 4 stroke; the 2 strokes smoke too much and you’d probably be cussed at a lot. Besides they sound like a can being hit with a stick.

J., sorry about the typo…the ST1300 is running great. Oh, I waited till the end of the video and saw the credit for Allistair. Went to iTunes and couldnt find the track on the video where the people started to speak. Can I get the track name? Thanks for the introduction to a great vocalist.
