FDA says “cloned food okay for now”

29Fda Lg-1

From the New York Times:
“After years of delay, the Food and Drug Administration tentatively concluded yesterday that milk and meat from some cloned farm animals are safe to eat. That finding could make the United States the first country to allow products from cloned livestock to be sold in grocery stores.”

I guess this whole cloning food thing bothers me a bit. I can’t quite put my third thumb on it but there’s just something not right about it.

This announcement from the FDA has been made after only 6 years of research and “hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and other studies on the health and food composition of clones and their offspring”. But it sounds like they haven’t done the most important thing…study people who have made cloned meat or milk part of their diet. Sure, the cows are identical but what the heck happens to US after we’ve used/consume/eaten/digested it for any length of time?

Will the meat taste like real meat or the cloned rubbery stuff like in The Fly? Will my cat go crazy and mew incessantly after drinking the milk? Will we grow extra limbs? Will our children be more likely to have super powers? Can we send Bizaro Mike Tyson back to his home planet? These are just some of the answers we need.

Wanna read some of the FDA documents for yourself? Here’s the link.

Apocalypto

C Apocalypto Teaser Cartel

In an effort to get all the violence my little brain needs *before* Christmas, we went to see the new Mel Gibson opus Apocalypto tonight. It wasn’t quite the bloodbath I was led to believe. And, while not quite as lyrically visual as Terrence Malick’s The New World it was a very interesting look at a lost civilization…subtitles and all.

It also occurred to me at the end that there should be an album of songs “inspired” by the movie. I was thinking of an album full of Latin and, perhaps, Caribbean rhythms called “Apocalypso“. Who knows, it could be a big seller. Boffo, even.

So, until there is an album of great tunes, drop by your local googlplex and catch an afternoon viewing of the newest dead-language movie by ol’ Mel.

Also, beware of the Spanish.
