Several blocks on a Triumph Scrambler

I got my hands on a 2006 Triumph Scrambler the other day.

Triumph Scrambler 2

Triumph Scrambler 1

While I didn’t have time to put it through a “200 mile” test, I can say it seems to be one of the more uncomfortable bikes I’ve ridden. The seating position is pretty high (32inches) and the plank-style seat isn’t very comfortable. A small, chromed cover over the exhaust pipes heats up pretty fast and is the only barrier between your leg and a good burn.

On the plus side, it’s a very retro-retooling of a classic dual-sport bike. The Scrambler has plenty of power (865cc) and shifts through the gears easily. There’s lots of power in the lower gears. And, it’s undeniable that you feel a little like Steve McQueen taking it for a ride.

After playing on it for a bit, my bike felt very low and easier to control. I’ll reserve more judgement until I can play around a little more.

Thanks to Don Fisher for letting me ride around on his baby.

babble-riffic!

I don’t know why, but this Babble machine sounds interesting.

If reading the info still doesn’t make sense, check out the demo video.

ooooooh, oooooooh

I’ve embarassed myself plenty of times. Most times it’s in front of one or two people, occassionally it’s been in front of a crowd.

There seems to be something in that moment when you’re caught doing something embarassing when your cheeks go flush and your eyes want to dart away. If you’re lucky, you can leave the situation, room, country…but sometimes you can’t.

let me set the stage…

I’m riding my motorcycle this morning. I have on a Fonzie-like leather jacket, my bike is all black and chrome, and I’m wearing dark sunglasses. In some form, I look (in my mind) tough. Or, at the very least, someone not to mess with while I’m on my bike.

Lately I’ve been wearing an iPod Shuffle and earphones. Music is good while riding around. It provides a soundtrack for the ride. This morning I may have been too caught up in what I was listening.

Before you laugh, I have to explain that I have a really eclectic music collection and I often just let my iPod fill itself with random music.

I’m coming up to a light while the America song Tin Man is playing. After the chorus there are some long “ooooooooo” parts to which I like to sing along.

Evidently, the big fella in the moving van one lane over could hear me loud and clear. So, happy-as-a-clam, I’m singing and look around only to see him staring at me. His head cocked to one side like a dog watching TV, his brows furrowed.

All in the same moment he, seemingly, looked me up and down (not in a lecherous way) and shook his head in disbelief. I say “seemingly” because I didn’t see it all take place. I was so embarassed that I popped the clutch and took off as soon as I could.

So, there’s no moral of the story other than “be careful what you sing out loud while dressed up as a biker”.

That kinda had a Village People ending, didn’t it?

Is it not illegal to ride while wearing headphones in Tennessee?

I won’t speak of the legalities, but, it’s not advisable to sing while riding.

I am just here to serve as an example that you shouldn’t follow. ;-) —–
