John 1 and the Trinity
How big is God? I was in church this morning and that was the opening topic. it’s actually a fairly interesting one when you sit right back and this about it. At no other point in history have we been able to see as far into the stars, as close in on a molecule or have been available to our peers (different types of communications).
John 1…
“1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God. 1:3 All things were made through him; and without him was not anything made that hath been made. 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 1:5 And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not.” (American Standard Version)
John takes us back to the very beginning, Genesis 1, to get us primed for the introduction of Jesus. John was giving us the opportunity to sit back and get a gander at the possibilities. We have to understand, as John starts, how closely God is tied to everything. There is nothing without Him, no plan no creation, no us.
Once we have that under some sort of wraps John goes on to tell us…in the Message translation,
“14)The Word became flesh and blood,
and moved into the neighborhood.
We saw the glory with our own eyes,
the one-of-a-kind glory,
like Father, like Son,
Generous inside and out,
true from start to finish.”
Okay, so, if the God *is* the Word, and the Word *is* God then we’re told that the Word became flesh (that’s Jesus) then God walked among us? I’m being a bit faceteous if only for the opportunity to sit back and look at that thought.
If you’re familiar with sunday school at all, then you’ve heard the concept of the Holy Trinity… Father (God), Son (Jesus) and Holy Spirit. They’re one in the same, they know what the other knows and they’re cogniscent of each other. They each have a different role.
For me, it’s easy to understand the God role (thought I don’t *quite* grasp the scope –it falls in that “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an engima” category). He’s the almighty creator, divine influence over all and master planner. Got it.
The Holy Spirit, sometimes called “The Helper”, is a divine force that works from the inside out. The Holy Spirit is called upon by God at times in the bible to change the hearts of men or to provide comfort. The “helper” is there to do just that. To aid in understanding, to guide.
Now, Jesus, the most complicated of the Trinity. Jesus is God’s answer to man who often says, “You don’t understand how hard it is to live life!” To which God retored, with Jesus, “Oh yeah?”
Here are some of the things I’ve wrestled with…most I still do.
Jesus is the Son of God, but doesn’t know anything of it, or doesn’t make good on it, until he’s 30? (Remember that historically/biblically Jesus only taught for about 3 years)
How much did Jesus know of his purpose? When did he learn it? Who taught him?
I’m not sure how all this is supposed to work… I want to be a life-long learner and I guess this is how it goes. Hopefully I’ll keep seeing the unanswered questions, well, unanswered to me anyway.
